Ever since I was 2 years old, I've been on vacation every year to La Escala, Spain (I'm 34 now, do the math ) Except for the times I was pregnant and this year because we moved and our money seems to haved also moved My brother and his family came back this last weekend and my parents are returning this sunday. How I've missed it.....having them on the phone talking about the restaurants, people, daytrips, etc.. It just makes me kind of homesick. After all I consider it my second home. But.......only 49 weeks before we can go again!!!!

{ final staycation blogshop prompt #10!}

Welcome to our final staycation blogshop!

Download the prompt to see how the members were inspired to do a Round Robin based on last week's prompt.

Did you enjoy your summer this year? I know my husband and I certainly appreciated all of our summer escapades much more than usual because we were making a special  effort to document our staycation experiences.

Now is time for a treat. We survived the summer of 2008 and so what do we do next? I know I would love to take a trip to Belize. I've heard of friends vacationing there, and my niece even had a destination wedding there with her immediate family present. It would certainly be a super treat to travel there in the upcoming future.

Here is how my desire translated into a hybrid page with a spinner. Just cut a quarter-circle out of the spinner, and put 4 quarter-circle photos behind it. I was able to use a travel-themed brad for the center. The gnome reminds me of the one from Travelocity, what do you think?

This week we offer two parts to the challenge and prompt! First, the theme is to add harmony and delight to your home to create a personal paradise.  See the handout for more information.

The second part of the challenge is a Round Robin!

What is a Round Robin? In this case, our Round Robin consists of two {storyteller} groups of 4 team members. In each group, person #1 created a layout based on this week's prompt (see Prompt #9 in the download). Next, person #1 shares her layout with person #2. Person #2 creates a layout following the prompt and either scraplifts or finds inspiration from person #1's layout. Person #2 shares her layout with person #3. And the cycle continues.

How do you play? (This is optional.) You have a chance to be part of the Round Robin too. We've enlisted the help of reader JenJ as person #1. I liked the way Natalie did the title "Before & After" so I kept the word "before" small and the "after" larger. I used some circle type elements such as the flowers and circle scribbles. Near the journaling, I have a cluster of a snip, label, and Chinese (?) characters similar to the cluster near the journaling that Natalie did.

Staycation Prompt #8 Download
How long has it been since you've read a book for pleasure? How about that perfect "beach read?" A beach read is one that is very easy, enteraining, yet hard to put down. This week's theme is to read that book you've been meaning to.  Myself, well, I have read more fiction this summer than I've read in at least four years, all thanks to Stephenie Meyer. I was proud of myself for reading "Eat, Pray, Love" last year, the first novel-type book I had picked up in years. But this year, everyone was talking about the Twilight series of books and then I got hooked!  I finished reading the first three books over the period of two months. Then I actually needed something to do yesterday in order to give my husband some space to get his work done, so I went out and bought the latest Stephenie Meyer book "Breaking Dawn" yesterday afternoon and read over 300 pages last night. I don't know what it is but these books are seriously addictive. In fact, I forgot all about today's blog post until I was ready to hit the sack at 1:30 am.

You might consider starting a book club for your friends' or better yet, for your children and their friends! Just google "how to start a book club" and you'll find lots of tips to get started.

My layout for this week is a hybrid layout featuring stamping. First I planned out where I wanted all my physical products to be on the layout, then I measured the space for the digi part. I did some fun stamping techniques by using a glue pad to make my stamp, then used Fun Flock on the arrow. For the journaling stamp, I used glitter. I used Stayz-on Ink for the photo corner. Hybrid layouts are most fun for me because I love using all my creative knowledge at once. It's a great challenge and I'm always up for a good challenge.

Journaling: For the past four weeks we have gone to the theater every Tuesday morning for the United Artists Family Film Festival. I enjoy cuddling Gideon and Yeshua at the same time while they eat their popcorn.  The boys are growing fast so being able to relax with the both of them is a real treat and takes me back to the baby days when my lap was big enough for two. Meanwhile Molly sits in Daddy's lap and he grabs handfuls of popcorn just for her. It never fails every time we run out of popcorn the kids are ready to switch laps for the rest of the movie. Matinees are the perfect getaway from the heat and provide an enchanted escape from reality for all of us.

As I sit here, my mother also here in the living room looking through one of my scrapbooking idea books, as she loves the hobby as well. She is visiting from Cleveland, Ohio - which is a great staycation idea - to invite loved ones and/or friends to come stay with you for a bit! tv and movies are part of us, part of what we do as a couple.
we just love cuddling up to spend time together and enjoy whatever's on. often it gets us talking about other stuff too. i love that we do this. i love that this pic is us watching house while we were on our honeymoon, at the airport waiting for the plane. i love that it's a record of what we loved, and what was in our lives at a given time. Glimpes of US right NOW: the dark knight - suitably dark. stop loss - great drama. middleman - fast paced tv dialog. swingtown - sexy and 70s.

How to Have the Best Movie Night Ever for Your Staycation

When you are staycationing, you don't want to have just any movie night. You want an awesome, rockin' staycation movie night. We've got the best tips, the best homemade movie treat recipes, and the best project ideas in our free download for this week. You'll want to try a movie that transports you to another place.

Maybe take your staycation movie night a bit further and print out for the kids a popcorn-related coloring page.

If you are fortunate enough to have a drive-in near your home, maybe make a trip to it your special staycation movie night event. Here in Rochester, NY our closest drive-in is the Vintage Drive-in in Avon. We have been to it three times already this summer, and plan to go again this week. It's a lot of fun plus you get a double-feature for just $7.00 per person (Now that's the kind staycation budget we like.)

An even better budget deal is being able to rent movies for free. Recently we started renting from the Red Box inside our local grocery store. Even though rentals are only $1 for a day, you can get free movie rentals by checking out InsideRedBox.com for movie rental codes and rent select movies for free.

Here is my Staycation movie project I completed -documenting the movie we will rent this weekend from the Red Box - Into the Wild. We chose this movie because we decided to order an inflatable kayak. Not only are there cool kayaking scenes in "Into The Wild", but the movie treks over eight states in the U.S. as well - giving us the incentive to get out and enjoy nature.

Do you own a Wii? It seems like the NIntendo Wii fever has caught on to almost everyone I know. And so, we focus on Game Night for our staycations this week. Whether you are playing together as a family virtually, or actually going outdoors to play - let's hear about your game plans.  The downloadable prompt for Game Night is below.  You'll want to download it to see all the layouts by the {we are} storytellers creative team including Emily Merritt and Kathryn Wilson.

My Game Night or rather Game Day project was to create an outdoor scavenger hunt as seen through the eyes of an "Alien Robot" (an idea I found on Crayola's website.)  In the pull-out flap, I added what each item translates to through a human's eyes: Planet Bases are Rocks and he needs to find 2 of them. Foliage Flakes are pieces of Bark; Earth Hair Strips are Grass; Insect Landing Bases are Leaves; UFO Shells are Seashells (since I am at the beach); Castle Dust is sand from the beach; Tree Feelers are Sticks from branches.  If you want to have a scavenger hunt, see how far your imagination can take you.

It seems our humble little blog is generating quite the excitement as we've been contacted by various news organizations wanting to interview us and our staycation participants. DailyCamera writer Laura Snider  posted  some tips to help you BUDGET YOUR STAYCATION - this week's theme. She wrote that "a recent report by the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation that found the average picnic costs $3.50 a person. They included all kinds of eats from hot dogs and hamburgers to potato salad and corn chips. Of course, if you decide to get brats from the Boulder Sausage Co. or buy sprouted wheat organic buns, it'll cost a little more." 

She also points out "gas prices are calculated using the average mpg rating for American cars, which the Environmental Protection Agency reports is 20. Gas prices are assumed to be $4 per gallon."

Using her figures, I researched a place for us to take a staycation within 200 miles of our home. I chose the outdoor museum Erie Canal Village in Rome, NY.

The place: Erie Canal Village is an outdoor living history museum. It is a reconstructed 19th century settlement on the site where, on July 4, 1817, the first shovelful of earth was turned for the construction of the original Erie Canal. Relax as our horse drawn Packet Boat plies a section of the enlarged canal giving visitors a taste of early 19th century water travel.

The plan: Sleep in before hitting the road to Rome, NY. Go on the boat cruise, then have a picnic lunch. Check out the Blacksmith demonstrations, then tour the village. Tour the museum buildings before dinner.

The cost:

Gas from Rochester to Rome, NY:  $34.40

Admission for two to the Erie Canal Museum, includes boat cruise: $30.00

Picnic for two: $7.00

Total: $74.40
